The Venue

The National Design Awards for the Society of American Registered Architects will be held at Hotel Marcel, an award-winning, net-zero carbon hotel located in New Haven, Connecticut. Hotel Marcel brilliantly repurposes the iconic Brutalist-style Pirelli Tire Building, designed by famed architect Marcel Breuer in 1967, and provides a truly inspiring setting to honor architectural excellence.

LEED Platinum-certified, Hotel Marcel is the nation’s first Passive House-certified hotel, as well as the nation’s first zero-emission hotel. We are especially proud to celebrate this venue knowing that the renovation of this historic hotel was led by the firm of Bruce Becker, a SARA member, whose work helped bring new life to an architectural landmark while preserving its remarkable legacy.

Hotel Marcel: Behind the Design

A Presentation & Architectural Tour with Bruce Becker, SARA

Step inside one of the country’s most remarkable adaptive reuse projects for a presentation and guided walking tour led by Bruce Becker, SARA — architect, developer, and owner of Hotel Marcel.

Originally designed by legendary Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer, this iconic Brutalist landmark has been transformed into a 165-room boutique hotel combining historic preservation with an ambitious approach to sustainable design.

Bruce will share the story behind the transformation before taking attendees through the building to experience it firsthand. Along the way, explore the design strategies and systems that helped Hotel Marcel become the first Passive House-certified hotel in the United States, achieve LEED Platinum certification, and operate without fossil fuels.
