Honoring Mitchel Abramowitz, FARA: A Legacy of Architecture and Mitch’s Promise
Mitchel Abramowitz, FARA
1932 – 2024
In Memory of Mitchel Abramowitz, FARA
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mitchel Abramowitz, FARA, a long-time member and treasured pillar of the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA). Mitch’s legacy in shaping the culture and mission of SARA cannot be overstated.
As a past president of the Pennsylvania Council, Mitch created a sense of community that truly embodied the spirit of “Architect Helping Architect.” He often hosted dinner parties and social gatherings at his home, welcoming his SARA family with open arms. At the time of his passing, Mitch was a sitting board member of the National Board of the Society as well as an active member of the Florida Council, where he was working tirelessly to help reorganize and revitalize the council. His steadfast presence and dedication were instrumental in modernizing our bylaws in 2021 and guiding our meetings with wisdom and kindness.
Mitch was adamant about the essence of our organization being a society—a point he passionately emphasized throughout his life. At the 2023 Philadelphia Design Awards, Mitch, despite his frail state, made his way to the stage to receive the Gregson Tie, presented to him by President Asaf Yogev, in recognition of his enduring support and commitment to SARA. During his acceptance, Mitch shared a story that exemplified his character and our mission.
He recalled being invited by another organization to attend their conference. While there, Mitch decided to set up a SARA table to represent the Society. When the event organizers approached him, questioning why he, as a representative of a "competing" organization, was present, Mitch replied with characteristic grace and conviction: “I am not your competitor; I am your friend. Our mission is Architect Helping Architect, and I am here to help you.” His words brought the room to its feet in a standing ovation, reminding everyone of the values Mitch so deeply cherished and lived by.
Mitch’s contributions extended far beyond this single moment. As a SARA Gold Medal recipient and Fellow, his impact and leadership were felt at every level of the organization. He is survived by his wife, Linda, who herself was a vital member of the Society, serving as the original Pennsylvania Council Executive Director and a consummate advocate of Mitch’s vision.
In honor of Mitch’s legacy, we are proud to announce the creation of the Mitchel Abramowitz Legacy of Support Grant (2025 Mitch’s Promise). This grant will provide financial reimbursement for the first licensing exam to aspiring architects, regardless of their economic status or path into the profession. True to Mitch’s belief in supporting one another, this reimbursement will be available whether or not the exam is passed.
Our mission is to change the culture of rewarding success and punishing failure. In Mitch’s spirit, we aim to support and uplift those pursuing licensure and welcome anyone, regardless of membership in SARA, to reach out for mentorship and guidance. This grant will be co-funded by the National, Pennsylvania, and Florida Councils of SARA as a testament to Mitch’s enduring influence.
We invite you to share your memories of Mitch and his remarkable legacy. Together, we will carry forward the values he championed, ensuring that Architect Helping Architect remains at the heart of everything we do.
Rest in peace, Mitch. You will forever be an inspiration to us all.
