Bruce Becker

Bruce Redman Becker is President of Becker + Becker, an integrated sustainable architecture anddevelopment firm in Westport, Connecticut.

Bruce designs buildings that have a transformative social and environmental value. His work includes historic rehabilitation of the former Bank of America tower in Hartford, CT into a 285-unit LEED Platinum mixed-income community; creation of 360 State Street in New Haven, CT which redeveloped a long vacant urban site into a 500-unit mixed-income community and cooperative grocery store, and adaptive re-use of the Wauregan Hotel in Norwich, CT to create 70 units of affordable housing and retail shops. The firm also restored the historic Octagon tower on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan to create a 500-unit mixed-income community and waterfront park. Most recently, Bruce completed the certified historic rehabilitation of the Pirelli building in New Haven, originally designed by Marcel Breuer, into Hotel Marcel - a 165-room boutique hotel that uses no fossil fuels and is the first Passive House certified hotel in the United States. Bruce also designed the headquarters for the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY, and served as master planner for Amherst College.

Bruce is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architect, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a Certified Passive House Designer. Bruce wrote the chapter in the AIA Handbook of Professional Practice on Architect as Developer. Bruce was appointed by President Biden in May 2024 to serve as one of the seven Commissioners of the United States Commission of Fine Arts, and fired by President Trump in October 2025 together with all other Commission appointees.

Bruce was a founding director of the CT Renewable Energy and Efficiency Business Association, and former Chair of the Harlem School of the Arts. He currently Chairs the Electric Vehicle Club of Connecticut and is a founding director of Land Use Atlas, Inc., and serves on the board of the Passive House Network. Bruce received a B.A. from Amherst College in American Studies and Fine Arts, and MBA and Master of Architecture degrees from Yale University. He is a frequent lecturer and design critic at Yale University and speaker at architecture, historic preservation and sustainable development industry events.
