2003 Sara Student Design Awards Program
Announces Winners In National Competition

Three students were awarded $4,500 in cash prizes (option of $9,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds), while four other students received Honorable Mention Awards in the 2003 Emily Munson Memorial Student Design Awards Competition. The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) sponsors the annual event. Jury members included Peter Buckley, Professor Cooper Union School, DiDi Pei, Pei Partnership, and Agustin Maldonado, SARA Member and Professor at New York City College of Technology. Committee Chairman, S.D. Don Zivkovic presided over the jury. The winning entries were announced during an awards luncheon held at Joe Franklin’s Restaurant in New York as part of the Society’s 47th national convention.

Winners among the 36 submissions from 21 architectural schools were:

David Bucciero, Sharon Tsepas, and Chris Legate, from Georgia Tech won the first place cash award of $3,000.00, for their team entry, “Tree Tectonics”, part of a Treehouse Exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Second Place went to Kyle Zerbey and Lauren McQuillen from Oklahoma State University, for their team entry, “Malama Learning Center” in Kapolei, Hawaii. Third Place award was to Steven Falkowski and Emily Schulte, from the University of Kansas for their team entry, “Dubile Moplex”.

Four Honorable Mention awards were also given to Paul Davis, from University of Washington in Seattle for his “Branch Library” project; Su Huixin from the National University of Singapore for the project, “Dynamic Statics – The Temple of Shiva”; Clarence San Tien Chia also from the National University of Singapore for his project, “Bicycle Recycling and DIY Center and Manole Voroneanu, from Miami University for the project, “Potential Architectures for Lower Manhattan-Rebuilding the World Trade Center Site”.

Information and forms for the Student Design Awards Program 2004 will be available early next year to all architectural schools and libraries. The program and forms will also be available at the Society’s website at: www.sara-national.org. The winners will be announced and awards presented at the 48th Annual Convention, convening in Chicago - October 2004.

The Society of American Registered Architects, founded in 1956 encourages students through its design award competition and other related activities to develop sound design skills and business practices, while enhancing their education and achieving proficiency toward licensing and architectural professionalism.
